Gov. Roy Cooper and coronavirus task force give update on state

GREENSBORO, N.C. — WFMY News 2 is providing daily coronavirus updates with the latest information from emergency leaders, the state's task force, health departments, universities, school districts, and a lot more.

NCDHHS will go over COVID-19 trends and Dept. of Public Safety will address how the face mask order will be better enforced.

  • NCDHHS Secretary Mandy Cohen went over our four key metrics: COVID-like syndromic cases, cases, percentage of positive tests, and hospitalizations. She said North Carolina is doing better in all of these areas.
  • Cohen said we're starting to see the number of new cases decline as well as the number of people coming to the hospital with COVID-like symptoms.
  • Cohen said hospitalizations are leveling off and our percentage of positive cases are going down as well.
  • Cohen said test results are coming back faster now.
  • DPS Secretary Eric Hooks said they want law enforcement agencies to be involved in educating the community to wear face masks. Hooks said they want to avoid arrests and law enforcement can issue citations as an alternative.
  • Cooper said the ACC has not been in touch with NCDHHS regarding games this fall. As of right now, ACC football is set to begin next month. Some conferences including the Big 10 are postponing their seasons due to the pandemic.
