UNC-Charlotte Vs. UNC Game Cancelled Due To COVID-19

Saturday's game between the UNC Charlotte 49ers and North Carolina Tar Heels has been cancelled due to COVID-19.

The decision was made after several UNC Charlotte offensive linemen were placed into quarantine as part of the university's protocols for COVID-19 contact tracing, the UNC Charlotte athletic department announced Thursday on its official website.

There have been three positive cases of coronavirus in football players through regular testing required by Conference USA over the past two weeks, the program confirmed. The players are in isolation receiving medical care and all other affected individuals were notified to quarantine by university contact tracers.

"We're extremely disappointed to have to cancel our game at North Carolina. While I know our team is heartbroken, due to the number of players in quarantine, we could not safely play," said Athletic Director Mike Hill. "We very much appreciate the University of North Carolina working with us to schedule this game."

UNC Charlotte reports a total of 3,150 tests have been administered to student-athletes, coaches and staff since June 20, which includes 200 additional tests administered on Monday. A total of 20 positive cases of COVID-19 have been reported as of Thursday, including one test among the 200 conducted on Monday.

UNC Athletic Director announced the football program will look to schedule a replacement for its open date next Saturday in an official statement below:

"This certainly is disappointing, especially for the student-athletes on both teams who had prepared hard for this game and were really looking forward to this match-up. We knew when we decided to play football in this environment the cancellations would be a possibility, because the health and safety of our teams and community is our priority. We are looking at opportunities to add an opponent on Saturday, Sept. 26, which is currently scheduled as an open date."

UNC Charlotte said Saturday's cancellation won't impact the status of its home opener against Georgia State next weekend.
